Health Information Exchange (HIE)
THE VELATURA HIE NETWORK HELPS YOUR HOSPITAL TAKE CARE OF YOU
WHAT IS THE VELATURA HIE NETWORK?
It is a legal, private and secure way to share your health records with your health providers and health care team electronically, instead of on paper.
WHAT DO MY HEALTH RECORDS SHOW?
- Your health problems
- Your medicines
- Your test results
- Your past care, like provider visits and surgeries
- Your allergies
HOW DOES VELATURA HIE EQUIP HOSPITALS TO TAKE CARE OF ME?
Hospitals use the information in your health records to make better choices about your care. Having access to this information may help your providers:
- Prevent mistakes
- Choose only tests and care needed
- Avoid medicines that don’t work well together.
VELATURA HIE CAN HELP US SAVE YOUR LIFE IN AN EMERGENCY
If you go to the hospital or emergency room, providing the doctor or nurse access to your past health records gives them the crucial information they need to take the best care of you.
Being able to access your records from other facilities and providers that care for you, and that are part of the Velatura HIE network, can help providers save your life. Your health record will tell them your:
- Health problems
- Allergies
- Medicines
- Test results
VELATURA CAN HELP YOUR FAMILY
If you have children, aging parents, or take care of someone, they can join Velatura, too. You can have peace of mind knowing providers can see their health records to help them in an emergency.
VELATURA HIE PROTECTS YOUR HEALTH RECORDS
YOUR RECORDS ARE PRIVATE
Only authorized health care provider/organizations and professionals involved in your treatment, coordination of care, quality improvement and activities related to the management or payment of your health care can access your records. Medical record information is protected under federal and state privacy laws; access, use, and disclosure of medical records will comply with those laws.
YOUR RECORDS ARE SECURE
Providers use a secure password to see your records. Velatura HIE keeps track of who views your records through the network. You can ask our medical records staff for a list of who has looked at your records.
YOUR ELECTRONIC RECORDS ARE SAFER THAN PAPER RECORDS
Your records are exchanged through a secure network directly to your providers. Your records cannot be sent to the wrong address or sit on a fax machine. Your records will be safe in case of a fire, flood or tornado.
DOES MY HOSPITAL OR PROVIDER PARTICIPATE IN THE VELATURA NETWORK?
To find out, just ask the staff. Or you can visit the Velatura website at www.velatura.org to see a list of healthcare organizations that participate with the Velatura network.
VELATURA HIE CAN HELP SAVE PRECIOUS TIME
Velatura HIE exchanges information fast and easy. You must wait for paper records to be sent before you may see a new provider or schedule a test. This equips Boone Hospital to help you:
- Get care sooner;
- Do less paperwork; and
- Get test results faster.
YOU CAN CHOOSE TO PARTICIPATE IN VELATURA HIE CORP
DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN VELATURA?
No. You have control over your health records. You can decide if you want to share your records with your providers and hospitals that are part of the Velatura HIE network.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T PARTICIPATE?
Your providers will not be able to access your health records through Velatura HIE, even in an emergency.
HOW DO I LET MY HOSPITAL OR PROVIDER KNOW IF I WANT TO PARTICIPATE?
Unless you decide to opt-out, your records will be shared through the Velatura HIE network. You can change your mind at any time by completing an opt-out form at your provider location or through the Velatura website.
IS THERE A COST FOR ME?
No. There is no cost for you to share your health records through Velatura HIE.
