About Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic illness that causes blood sugar to remain higher than normal. In a person with diabetes, the pancreas makes little or no insulin, or the body does not use the insulin made by the pancreas.

While some people with diabetes have no symptoms, many experience one or more of the following:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Increased appetite
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Slow-healing cuts/wounds
  • Rapid weight loss
