Chronic Pain

Pain is a lifesaving alarm system at its best, but can be a chronic hindrance to your favorite activities – or even your most basic functions – at its worst. Learn about your pain and the role of your nervous system in your experience of pain through Boone’s Pain Neuroscience Education program. We will teach you the tools you need to harness the power of your nervous system to your advantage so you can improve your function and get back to doing the things you love. Let our therapists help you reduce the sensitivity of your body’s alarm system by guiding you to gradually increase activity levels, improve your sleep quality, manage your stress, and set goals for improving your quality of life.

Did your injury occur months or even years ago and still affect you every day? Does a light touch on your painful body part make you flinch away with pain? Does your pain flare up during stressful times in your life? Do you say no to social activities and recreational opportunities because you are worried you will hurt afterward?

These may be signs that you have a type of chronic pain that would benefit from treating not only your affected body part, but your central nervous system as well. Nervous system changes after an injury can cause spreading pain, sensitivity to light touch and temperature changes, pain fluctuations with stress, swelling, and disproportionate pain relative to your original injury/issue.

The good news is, treating your nervous system with education, breathwork, and pacing activities to help you get back to doing things you love can help restore your brain’s natural ability to control pain.

Interventions may include:

  • pain neuroscience education – teaching you about your body’s amazing alarm system and how its settings can change over time
  • aerobic activity to harness your body’s own pain-relieving, mood-boosting chemicals
  • graded motor imagery – working to de-program the pain you experience with certain movements
  • localization training – helping your brain re-map the affected area of your body
  • Everything PT normally has to offer, like manual techniques to increase blood flow, neurodynamics to give your nerves the space and movement they crave, strengthening, stretching, balance training and more.

Ask your doctor about a referral to PT for Boone’s Pain Neuroscience Education program. Our therapists will help you get back to activities you love.
