Prayers

Our chaplains pray regularly for our patients and staff. We believe that prayer holds a powerful role in the healing process and provides comfort in times of need. We would be delighted to include your request in our daily prayer.

The following scriptures and prayers are taken from the BuddhistChristianHebrewHindu, and Islamic faith traditions.

Prayer for Peace

May all beings everywhere
plagued with sufferings
of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid,
and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power,
and may people think
of befriending one another.
May those who find themselves
in trackless, fearful wilderness
– the children, the aged, the unprotected –
be guarded by beneficial celestials,
and may they swiftly attain Buddahood.

For the Patient

O God, the source of all health; so fill my heart with faith in your love that, with calm expectation, I may make room for your power to fill me, and gratefully accept your healing. Amen.

Before Surgery

Strengthen me, your servant, Lord, to do what has to be done, and to bear the burden of surgery. Help me to accept Your healing gifts through the skills of surgeons, nurses and technicians; so that I may be restored to use in Your world with thankfulness in my heart. Amen.

Worry Will Not Change It

Jesus said: “Do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on...which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?...Seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.” –Matthew 5:25,27,33

Upon Receiving Bad News

God, you know the disappointment, the discouragement, the anxiety, the loneliness, yes, even the anger I feel because my prognosis is not good. I can only pray that You will give me and my loved ones the strength to face whatever lies ahead. Don’t let us panic. Let us be open and honest with one another, and enable us to make the most and the best of the coming days. Amen.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. –Psalm 23

God Is Our Refuge

[Hebrew Text] God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea. –Psalm 46:1,2

Thank God

[Hebrew Text] It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
To sing praises to Your name, O Most High,
To declare Your steadfast love in the morning.
–Psalm 92:1,2

Prayer for the Healing of Body, Mind and Spirit

May the Supreme Lord of the Universe
nourish the body
so that I may have only auspicious words,
that I may see only good things,
that I may see the divinity in all things
and everywhere experience
the many forms
of the One Supreme God;
that all people on earth
may be blessed.

The Shahada

[Qur’an Text] “There is no God except Allah and Muhammed is His messenger.”

Du’as (Personal Prayers)

O Allah, You are the source of peace and from You comes peace, exalted are You, O Lord of Majesty and Honor.
O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and my teachers, and all believing men and women, and all Muslim men and women with Your mercy, O most Merciful of all who have mercy.

The Opening Chapter of the Qur’an

Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds. Most Gracious, Most Merciful Master of the Day of Judgment, You do we worship, and Your aid we seek.

Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Mercy, of those who do not earn Your anger, nor go astray.

Qur’an 1:1-7

Supplication for Distress

O God! Set aright my faith which is the safeguard of my affairs. Set aright my world wherein is my living. Set aright my Hereafter whereto shall we return. Let life be a source of increase in every righteousness unto me, a means of relief from every evil.
